Wellington Debating Society
Are Parenting Licenses a good idea? Should we force parents, all parents, to pass an exam before they are allowed to become parents? And stop those who fail to pass the test? Obviously, this is a bad idea, but it was up to the Proposition – the Government Speakers – to convince the judges that the world is in such a bad state, that kids these days are so awful, that the world is going to hell in a hand-cart, and that it is sub-standard parenting that is the root cause of all of this. Unfortunately, they failed to do this. So, the Opening Opposition Team of Jessica Bell and Ella Goodman had it too easy; all they had to do was to go through, point by point, what a stupid idea this is, and what awful consequences would probably come from such a motion: poor people not being allowed to have children, racial profiling, a black market in babies, gangs of hidden children, etc.
Next Thursday’s debate at 3.00 in Room 9.
