Wellington Debating Society
This week we debated whether the Just Stop Oil movement is counter-productive. Yes, it makes a lot of noise, but does it actually achieve anything? The Proposition were much stronger this week, as they had a clearer structure to their argument – that there was, or would be, a backlash to the tactics adopted by the Just Stop Oil movement, one that would undermine everything they claim to be working for – the stopping of oil, of global warming, and its resultant effects. The closing half of the opposition began to make a good point about how the movement was harming those who are most vulnerable in society; however, they didn’t fully pursue this, leaving the opening Opposition Team of Sufyaan Farid and Daniel Johnson to win the debate, making the strongest case for how the Just Stop Oil movement is both counter-productive as well as how it has zero impact on bringing forward its stated goals. Next week we will be debating whether the introduction of a parenting license would be a good idea. Next Thursday at 3.00 in Room 9.
