Wellington Debating Society

Today students debated whether former colonial countries should pay reparations to former colonies. The proposition, led by the government speakers, argued that due to the numerous crimes of the imperialist countries towards the colonised, it is necessary for reparations, to begin to redress the harm caused. They contended that reparations are vital to create a new world, free of the legacies of colonialism. It was, however, the opposition who won the debate, arguing convincingly, that reparations are not necessary as they would increase resentment between former colonial and colonised countries. Instead, they stated, we must look to bridge divides, rather than reinforce them, and only this will help build a more co-operative and peaceful world.
