Visit from Innovative Primary School
On Wednesday, Mr A Percival, Assistant Headteacher from Stanley Road Primary School in Oldham, came to see how students continue to learn grammar and writing at Secondary School. Stanley Road Primary School is at the forefront of teaching grammar to inform better writing at Primary level. Here at Wellington, we want to ensure that all of the grammatical knowledge acquired by students at primary school is put to good use: making writing more controlled, sophisticated and impactful. We are part way through devising a Writing Curriculum across Years 7,8,9,10 and 11, and Mr Percival observed a Year 7 lesson – where pre-existing knowledge of clauses and phrases was reinforced and put to good use, enhancing students’ writing. Also, observing a Year 11 lesson, Mr Percival was able to see how far students can get on this path, writing the most sophisticated sentences, building beautiful sentences from the foundations of sound grammatical knowledge.
