Poppy Appeal

Every November, Wellington School volunteers to sell poppies as part of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. The poppy became a symbol of Remembrance after the First World War. Although the tradition of Remembrance began after the First World War, it has continued to include the service and sacrifice of people fighting for and alongside the UK and Commonwealth in every conflict since then. This year, we asked Wellington staff to pause and consider why they wear a poppy. We’d like to share their personal stories and connections with you, as some of these stories are remarkable! We managed to collect a great amount to contribute to the Legion so thank you for your support. We also offered the sale of white poppies, alongside the traditional red poppies. The white poppy has been worn in the run-up to Remembrance Day for over ninety years, as a symbol of remembrance and peace. White poppies are worn every year by thousands of people across the UK and beyond. White poppies stand for three things: Remembrance of all victims of war, Challenging war and militarism and a commitment to peace. We all wear poppies for different reasons so it’s been lovely to see such a positive response from our pupils to this year’s appeal.
