Healthy Eating Week 2024
This week is the British Nutrition Foundations Healthy Eating Week Monday 10th – Friday 14th June. This year’s challenges have been to:
- Get at least 5 A DAY
- Stay hydrated
- Move more
- Focus on fibre
- Reduce food waste
At Wellington School we have been trying to get at least 5 a Day and focusing on fibre with two cooking sessions.
Tuesday 11th – Vegetable Cakes
Year 8 and 9 pupils, who attend the after school cooking club, worked in pairs to make vegetable cakes. Whilst one person was peeling, boiling and mashing the potatoes, their partner crushed some oatcakes and prepared an egg for coating the cakes. Once the potatoes were mashed pupils add some mixed vegetables: peas, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli. They then shaped the cakes (similar to fish cakes) and then dipped them in egg before coating them in the oatcake crumbs. The cakes were then shallow fried to give a crispy, golden coating.
Thursday 13th – Overnight Oats
Year 7 pupils were invited to attend a short lunch time session where they had the opportunity to make some overnight oats ready for breakfast on Friday mornings. Pupils were encouraged to think about Healthy Habits including eating a balanced breakfast. The pupils then used their practical skills to weigh and measure oats and oat milk which were then combined in a cup. Pupils added yoghurt to the mix and mixed well. The oats were then topped with strawberries, blueberries, seed mix and a drizzle of honey. Pupils were able to collect their products at the end of the day, ready to take home for Friday’s breakfast.
A massive well done to all pupils involved.
