Geography Awareness Week, Cake Competition

On November 15th, to celebrate Geography Awareness Week, the department hosted a Cake Competition for Key Stage 3. The event aimed to combine the skills of baking with an appreciation for the subject of Geography. Students from various year groups participated, showcasing their creativity by designing cakes inspired by geographical features, landmarks, and cultures from around the world.

The competition was open to individuals and groups of students, who were tasked with designing and baking a cake that represented a geographical theme. Cakes ranged from detailed depictions of the structure of the Earth, to topographical models of coastlines and volcanoes. The students were encouraged to use a variety of techniques, from icing and fondant to edible decorations, to bring their geographical ideas to life.

The cakes were judged on the following criteria:

Design

The visual appeal and creativity of the cake were heavily considered.

Student Vote: Kelly Zhu, Kylie Sharma and Ella Zhu (Year 8)

Teacher vote: Sophie Mudd (Year 8)

Taste

A crucial aspect of the competition was the flavour of the cakes. Each entry was sampled by the bakers and their invited guests.

Student Vote: Hattie Godding and Jess Cronin (Year 7)

Teacher Vote: Eloise Barlow (Year 7)

Geographical Accuracy

Finally, the cakes were judged on how accurately they represented the chosen geographical theme

Student Vote: Isolde Powell (Year 7)

Teacher Vote: Jemima Welch (Year 7), and Vislyn So (Year 8)

While there were winners in each category, it’s important to acknowledge that every single cake was fantastic. The time, effort, and creativity that each participant put into their entry was truly impressive.
