European Literature Society

The ‘European Literature Society’ were reading ‘The Moustache’ by Emmanuel Carrère this week. We discussed themes such as our perception of self, how we construct our Identity, and how we can define a person. The novel provoked a discussion on whether we could be deprived of self-identity, or our sense of self, and how this might happen. There was also the knotty philosophical problem of appearance versus reality. This novel really got us wondering what happens when a person’s concept of normality is called into question, and just how fragile our sense of self can be.
