Author Visit
We were delighted to welcome the fabulous author AM Dassu to Wellington School on Wednesday. The author talked about her latest book Kicked out, set in Hale Barns, which is a sequel to her book Boy, Everywhere. Her characters come from all walks of life, cultures and background and her books are full of empathy and compassion for people who find themselves forced to leave their homes. The central character, a young boy called Sami faces these challenges with courage, resilience and hope.
Pupils were surprised that photos of ice rinks, cafes, fast food restaurants and shopping malls were not in fact taken in Trafford but in Syria, contrary to the images of Syria we often see in the Media; a timely reminder about the importance of challenging stereotypes.
So, thank you to AM Dassu and Rachael from Waterstones Altrincham for an insightful afternoon and for signing books for our pupils; and thank you to the Year 8s who listened so carefully and asked some very thoughtful questions.
