Lecture on Postcolonial Theory, Literature and Film

On Wednesday a group of Wellington students from Years 10,11 and 13 attended a lecture on ‘Postcolonial Theory, Literature and Film’ at Urmston Grammar School. A part of Urmston Grammar School’s Community Lecture Series, designed to provide a super-curricular opportunity for students to experience university level teaching with an expert in their field, this lecture explored how imperial and colonial power has been imagined, staged and challenged by individuals throughout European and Western history, from Shakespeare’s Henry IV and The Tempest to Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. The question-and-answer sessions afterwards really put the expert through his paces, as he was challenged by our students on his positions on Imperialism in the modern day, as well as on how other social disparities are dealt with in literature, especially be set texts. All of our students are looking forward to the next lecture in this series, dealing with Feminism.
