CyberFirst Girls Competition Celebration
On Monday lunchtime we marked the conclusion of the annual CyberFirst Girls Competition with a little celebration event. All 30 participants were presented with certificates and the final team scores were announced. The winning team from Wellington were ‘Beautiful Ducks’ who scored a whopping 4810 points. Whilst they were not successful in winning the national event and scooping prizes of laptops each, they did bag themselves a chocolate orange and a big round of applause! Well done girls, you were brilliant. I should also mention team ‘Logic Labs’ who came a close second with 4388 points, well done!
I have been so impressed with the drive and commitment shown by these young coders. The computer science rooms were a buzz with energy for the 10 days the competition ran, many of the teams meeting up every lunch break to try to solve a few more puzzles each day. I know that a number of the girls worked hard in their own time at home as well. The challenges were not easy, you can have a look at some examples here. https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberfirst/girls-competition-example-challenges
I could not be prouder of the girls who joined in this event. In the process they have developed their teamwork, leadership, resilience, problem-solving, communication skills and independence. CyberFirst is designed to identify and nurture a diverse range of talented young people into a cyber security career. Here at school, we hope that through participation in this scheme, more girls will be encouraged and inspired to take Computer Science at GCSE as a first step on that journey.
