Staff Book Club
The inaugural staff book club kicked off with the Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker; the story of the Iliad told in the words of Briseis, Trojan queen and captive of Achilles. Given only a few words in Homer’s epic and largely erased by history, she is nonetheless a pivotal figure in the Trojan War. Her story pulls back the veil on the thousands of women who lived behind the scenes of the Greek army camp as the legendary war hurtles toward its inevitable conclusion. Opinions were mixed, some people felt it was a bit repetitive ( not much of a page turner if you know what happens in the end?) so there was plenty to talk about. The majority however, really enjoyed it and are putting the next two books in the trilogy ( see below) on their Christmas list!
