Year 11 Football

Year 11 played their last match in Wellington colours on Wednesday night, and they could not have done anymore for the badge- I am so proud of them! It was the final of the Greater Manchester competition being played out in Lower Broughton versus local rivals Ashton on Mersey. We knew we were coming up against tough opposition but we have had a different belief this year in the team. After 5 years, all the pieces of the jigsaw have finally slotted together. We have really performed well this year and knew we could give them a game. We went 2-0 up after 30 minutes, it was a dream start. Unfortunately, we conceded before half time but still went into the break leading 2-1. We had 40 minutes to drag the match over the line. Ashton came out firing in the second half and really showed their class- they had already won our league. Although we battled hard, they scored 2 goals in quick succession taking it to 3-2 AOM. Understandably, we had a period of 5 minutes then were we went flat. All our hard work was not enough. It was hard to see the lads hurting in that way. However, as they have done all season, they rallied together and really galvanised a wave of attacks. We were hurting but we were not going to go down without a fight. We had a few chances, hitting the bar and having it cleared off the line. However, we were not able to find that elusive 3rd goal. Every man, and I use that term purposefully as they showed maturity and character beyond their years, worked themselves to exhaustion and they could not have done any more. That is football.

I am immensely proud of them and we have made memories that will last a lifetime.
