Year 10 – Portioning a Chicken

Well done to year 10 who this week have worked in groups to learn how to portion a whole chicken.

As part of the Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE, pupils are required to demonstrate a number of high level practical skills.  One of these higher level skills is portioning/jointing a whole chicken.  This can be into either 6, 8 or 10 pieces depending on whether you separate the wings and also the legs and thighs.

Many pupils feel a little squeamish the first time they try this task, so to help pupils they were able to work in small groups of 2 or 3 pupils.  We were able to use the Tesco funding we were awarded to purchase the chickens for the pupils to use. The whole class faced their initial fears head on and did a great job of portioning the chickens.

The following day the pupils used the chicken portions to create a number of dishes which they researched and planned themselves.  These can be seen on our Wellington Design Technology Instagram page.

A massive well done to all pupils involved. I look forward to seeing you performing this skill next year.
