Hockey News

This week we took the U16 boys hockey team to compete in a North West event at Timperley Hockey Club.

Our team consists mainly of Year 10 boys so we knew it would be a good challenge. Alex Riley and Will Binns from Year 11 came along to play after their mock exam. We drew 0-0 with St Anselms, beat St Bedes 5-0 and knew we had a tough game last in our pool, Sedbergh School. They were a good team but we held strong, despite their efforts to push our lads over! We only lost this game 2-0 but we were sure we’d made it into the semi’s based on goal difference. This was unfortunately not the case and we felt somewhat hard done by.

Given that we were playing mostly a year up I am very pleased with the performance on the day and look forward to next year’s event. Thanks must go to Mrs Firth and Mr Crooks who helped to organise the boys and to Owen Moss who was head coach due to his broken leg. It was hard to watch his team from his wheelchair, but he remained positive, almost, throughout!

All the lads played really well with goals from Kieran Smith, Joe Wiggan and Will Binns but the man of the tournament was unanimously James Brown-he controlled the midfield and sprayed the ball brilliantly to the wings, plus had a good hand in our short corner routines. Well done James!
