European Literature Society
The next book being read by the ‘European Literature Society’ will be ‘The Moustache’ by Emmanuel Carrère. It is a comment on the power of the mind and how utterly terrifying it may be when one loses control of it. This week we discussed the ending of Voltaire’s ‘Candide’ and question whether it is still relevant for readers of today. We decided that it is still a thought-provoking text and that it should still be widely read. The issues raised by Carrère’s novel should be very different and should be even more relevant for the reader of today.
