Alterman Building

On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of being visited by Ike Alterman. Ike is a Holocaust survivor. His Fed My Voice life book, which chronicles his life before, during and after the Second World War and includes detailed recollections of his time as a prisoner of four Concentration Camps, has inspired the History Department to redesign our teaching of the Holocaust around Ike’s story. As a result of this, Ike has become part of the Wellington Community and our pupils continue to learn invaluable lessons from his life every year. Ike has made such an impact on our staff and students that we decided to rename the Humanities building after him. Ike, his family and friends from the Jewish Fed were present at School on Wednesday afternoon to see Ike proudly unveil the Alterman Building. To quote Ike’s speech, ‘Never in my wildest dreams did I think the young boy who came to England with no family, having survived the worst of man’s cruelty, would be standing her having a building named after him’.

Ike is a wonderful man and fully deserves the honour of having a building at Wellington named in his honour. His legacy will live on at Wellington School for many years.
